In 2015, the leader of the industry of reproductive cells and tissues banking, American cryobank “Xytex Cryo International” celebrated its 40th anniversary. This is an important event not only in the history of Xytex Cryo International, but also for the industry of human cells and tissues banking in general.
In 1975, Dr. Armand Karow, working with Dr. Roy Witherington at the Medical College of Georgia founded the first sperm bank in the southeastern part of the USA – Xytex Corporation Inc, which later became a world leader in sperm banking, donor programs of eggs cryoconservation, long-term storage of biological tissues and umbilical cord blood. Currently Xytex Cryo International is totally owned by its employees.

In Ukraine, the Institute of Cell Therapy, the full member of the Association of cryobanks, offers high quality services of cryo-storage of ovarian tissue, ova, sperm. The service is primarily intended for cancer patients of childbearing age, whose impending treatment is accompanied by the risk of infertility development. At the Institute of Cell Therapy, the first Ukrainian cryobank of umbilical cord blood also is being operated. To date, cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy is the only biobank in Ukraine, licensed according ISO 9001: 2008.
