Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine joined the Association

ElskayaInstitute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine became an academic member of the Association of Cryobanks of Umbilical Cord Blood, Other Human Tissues and Cells.

Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine is a leading research institute of the country, that focuses on the latest research in the field of molecular biology and genetics, such as structural and functional genomics, proteomics and protein engineering, molecular and cellular biotechnology, bioinformatics, computer-aided modeling and design. The Institute was founded in 1973, and its founders were world-famous Ukrainian scientists — BE Paton, SM Gershenson, VP Zosymovych, PK Shkvarnikov, GH Matsuka.

Today the Institute is actively involved in the implementation of state scientific and technical programs, including «National program of liquidation of the consequences of Chernobyl catastrophy and social protection of the citizens», «Protection of the population from the most common infectious diseases», «National program of AIDS prophylaxis in Ukraine», «Health of the nation», «Gene and analytical biotechnology», «Implementation and application of grid-technology», «Development and manufacturing of sensor products», «Nanotechnologies and nanomaterials», «The development of advanced technologies for the creation of domestic pharmaceuticals for human health and meet the needs of veterinary medicine» and others.

Over the years the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine received a number of awards and prizes. Thus, there are 30 holders of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology among the staff of the Institute and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine was awarded by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for the contribution to the development of scientific research in the field of genetic engineering and therapy, creation and implementation of modern biotechnology and drugs.

Institute scientists have published more than 5,000 scientific papers, almost 1200 of which in the most prestigious international journals such as Science, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Human Genetics, Human Mutation, Proteins, Nucleic Acids Research, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and others. The associates of the institute received 2 diplomas for scientific discoveries and more than 250 patents for inventions and patents, also more than 90 conferences and congresses were held.

The Institute has an active international activity. For years, scientists have successfully collaborating with the institutions with researchers from over 80 countries, including Germany, France, USA, Great Britain, Poland, Italy, Greece, Japan, Russia, Belarus and others. The Institute has four projects of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7): «Improving Diagnoses of Mental Retardation in Children in Eastern Europe and Central Asia through Genetic Characterization and Bioinformatics/-Statistics» (FP7-HEALTH, SICA), «Nanosensors Based on Nanomaterials» (FP7-PEOPLE, IRSES), «Transnational Access to NMR» (FP7 East-NMR programme) and «Strengthening Cooperation in Molecular Biomedicine between EU and Ukraine» (COMBIOM, FP7-INCO- 2011- 6, ERA-WIDE). For a long time bilateral relations with the institutions of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the National Center for Scientific Research of France (CNRS) are maintained.

The Institute publishes three academic journals: «Biopolymers and Cell», «Ukrainica Bioorganica Acta», «Bulletin of the Ukrainian Society of Geneticists and Selectioners.»
