In the world over 100 billion dollars are being spent annually for the management of the  problems associated with back pain. Back pain in approximately 40% of patients is associated with disc degeneration. Existing today conservative, surgical and physiotherapeutic methods of treatments for herniated discs do not always allow to achieve the desired therapeutic effect and satisfactory quality of life of the patients.

Institute of Neurosurgery n.a. AP Romodanov of NAMS of Ukraine in cooperation with the Institute of Cell Therapy developed an innovative method of treatment of hernias of intervertebral disks, based on transplantation of the cultured autologous chondrocytes.

Based on the positive results of the experimental studies the Coordination Center of Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine issued the permission to conduct the clinical trial “Evaluation of the clinical efficacy of autologous chondrocytes for the surgical treatment of herniated intervertebral discs” on the clinical base of the Institute of Cell Therapy and Institute of Neurosurgery n.a. acad. A.P. Romodanov of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

Culturing of chondrocytes for all patients prior to transplantation was conducted by the Institute of Cell Therapy, cofounder and a full member of the Association of cryobanks. Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy is the only biobank in Ukraine, accredited due to the prestigious International Quality Certificate ISO 9001: 2008.

The results of clinical trials have shown the safety and efficacy of this therapeutic approach.

Joint project of the  Institute of Neurosurgery n.a. acad. A.P. Romodanov of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the Institute of Cell Therapy Development of the innovative biotechnologies of the repair of lumbar intervertebral discs after microdiscectomy and evaluation of their effectiveness (experimental and clinical research) became the winner of the competition of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for the best research work carried out in 2015. The scientific chief of the work was Prof. Eugene G. Pedachenko, MD, PhD, academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

Developed by the Institute of Neurosurgery and Institute of Cell Therapy innovative biological method of intervertebral discs reair in the near future will be implemented in practical medicine.
