Association of Сryobanks supports the international action “March is colorectal cancer awareness month” in Ukraine
Colorectal cancer makes one half of all malignancies of the digestive tract in Europe. Every year 342,137 new cases of colorectal cancer are registered in the EU.
As early detection results in a 90-95% survival rate, United European Gastroenterology (UEG), is urging all European men and women over 50 to ‘Step Up, Take the Test’ and undertake screening for colorectal cancer. In support of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (March), UEG also calls upon all EU countries to evaluate advanced screening techniques, such as a simple faecal immunological test, to help increase uptake and survival rates (source http://www.ueg.eu).
In Ukraine, Association of cryobanks joins the international action aimed to increase the early detection of colorectal cancer, as well as to raise awareness of Ukrainian doctors about the possibilities of cell therapy of inflammatory bowel disease, especially ulcerative colitis, which is often complicated by the development of cancer.
As modern researchers report, cell therapy will become the next generation of drugs in the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Due to insufficient efficacy of anti-cytokine therapy of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, stem cell transplantation is being increasingly used in coloproctology.
Actually more than 1,500 patients with inflammatory bowel disease have been treated with cell therapy. It was also noted that cell therapy for inflammatory bowel disease can reduce the dose of glucocorticoids in treatment of these patients.
Thus, the preservation of stem cells in the cryobank is a modern biological insurance, also for the cases of severe diseases of the colon.
