Immunosuppressive therapy followed by transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is recognized as an effective treatment of severe systemic inflammatory connective tissue diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, etc.). Mesenchymal stem cells are used to regenerate damaged cartilage and bone tissue, for the production of bone and cartilaginous structures, and stem cells isolated from the placenta show the highest osteogenic and hondrogenic potential. In Ukraine, the Institute of Cell Therapy, which is a full member of the Association of Cryobanks developed and patented methods of isolation and cryostorage of placental mesenchymal stem cells as well as gained some successful experience in the treatment of intervertebral hernias using cell technologies.
